Guatemalan director Julio Hernández-Cordón’s film “Te Prometo Anarquía” has won the first edition of IFF Panama’s new industry section Primera Mirada, while Ariel Escalante’s Costa Rican debut “El Sonido de las Cosas” received a special mention.
The jury of the first edition of Primera Mirada, comprised by renowned filmmaker Elena Manrique, actor and director Salvador del Solar and Cinergía director María Lourdes Cortés, unanimously decided to select Hernandez-Cordón’s feature out of five films which are all still in their respective post-production stages.
“This award is already fundamental for a region whose cinematography is constantly growing, not just on a quantitative level, but quality-wise as well. Especially since Central American productions lack state support and receive very little from the private enterprise.”
Elena Manrique acknowledged what the influence of Primera Mirada means to the Central American film industry and the opportunity to have witnessed, through this program, a diverse selection of movies and new directors, along with a close collaboration. “I trust that the following editions will motivate directors to explore genres such as comedy, horror, and thrillers,” she added.
According to Cortés, in the 90s only one full-feature film was produced in all of Central America, while in the last 15 years more than 80 films have been made in the area despite limited support.
According to IFF director Pituka Ortega Heilbron and artistic director Diana Sánchez, Primera Mirada is another example of the festival’s commitment to the Central American and Caribbean film industry, as well as Panama’s advantage as a natural place for the creation of a coherent growth.
In its first edition, more than 50 rough cuts were submitted to Primera Mirada, after which only five were chosen for the final selection.
